PENTICTON RESIDENT WINS PRESTIGIOUS COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

PENTICTON – The B.C. Achievement Foundation recently announced Yasmin John-Thorpe of Penticton is a recipient of the 2010 British Columbia Community Achievement Awards.

“Yasmin’s commitment to literacy programs and fostering young writers in the Okanagan is an important part of Penticton’s creative fabric,” said Penticton MLA and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Bill Barisoff.

Yasmin John-Thorpe co-founded the Penticton Writers and Publishers Club and coordinates the local Raise-a-Reader program.  She is also a key figure in the Young Okanagan Writers Connect and the B.C. Youth Write Camp.

This year, forty-five British Columbians were selected for their contributions by an independent panel and prizes are endowed by the B.C. government.  The Lieutenant-Governor will formally present B.C. Community Achievement Awards at Government House on April 28, 2010.
