WILDLIFE PROTECTED AT SKAHA BLUFFS PARK

PENTICTON – Skaha Bluffs Park gains 310 hectares to protect wildlife and outdoor recreation thanks to new legislation that will establish seven new “Class A” provincial parks, one new conservancy and added land to 10 existing provincial parks.

“Skaha Bluffs Park is one of the many parks which contribute to Penticton’s natural beauty,” says Penticton MLA Bill Barisoff. “The park’s expansion will ensure that it will be available for future generations to enjoy.”

The park consists of a variety of distinctive terrain features, such as steep cliffs, riparian areas, grassland and open forest, which function together to provide habitat for many provincially or federally listed species at risk, including bighorn sheep, western rattlesnake and western screech owl. It is also a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and boasts access to top-quality rock climbing.

Located on the southeast perimeter of the City of Penticton, the park will grow by 310 hectares as a result of private land acquisitions. Sublot 19, comprising approximately 307 hectares, was purchased through a collaborative effort by the Ministry of Environment, the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the Land Conservancy of BC, the BC Trust for Public Lands and through the contributions of numerous individuals, groups and agencies.
